EVERYTHING CHANGES, NOTHING EVER STAYS THE SAME — by Catherine Morgan

This isn’t “breaking” news. We all know that nothing stays the same. We all know that life is constantly changing. However, I think that we all under-estimate this fact in many ways. What I mean is, when things are going great in our lives, we don’t think about the times that they weren’t so great. And, when things are going badly and we are feeling sad, it is sometimes hard to remember that we were ever happy. In both these cases, it is important for us to not only remember, but to also reflect.

I think this is important because, if we take some time to reflect on the bad days, on days that are going well for us, we can get a better perspective on our lives. Seeing a bad day from the perspective of a good day, allows us to become “aware” of the notion that time heals. Something, that on our bad days, we may not be able to fully appreciate.

On our bad days, the notion that “time heals”, may seem like a small consolation. That brings me to the reason that on a bad day, taking some time to reflect on the happier times, can be helpful in not allowing ourselves to spiral into those hopeless feelings.

Our perceptions of the changes in our lives, both good and bad, are what will determine our reactions to those changes. So, if we can react with the “awareness” that nothing stays the same, and that nothing is meant to stay the same, then we are creating a more comfortable reality for ourselves.

So, what I am trying to say is. Don’t take your highs, so high, that when something brings you down, you crash. And, don’t let your lows, bring you so low, that when something comes around that could pick you up, you are so deep in despair that you can’t even realize it. This may seem easier said than done. But, as with everything else, the more you practice it, the easier it becomes.

this is just beautiful, thank you Catherine! i have been using this same thinking for when i am feeling low: THIS TOO SHALL PASS. and a very wise buddhist nun once said to me, “Don’t go up with the up or down with the down”.

    Hi Catherine,
Ganhdi stated, “Be the change you want to see in the world”. Fritz Pearls, I believe stated that “if nothing changes it remains the same”. Both of these quotes speak volumes to me. I need to be the change I want to see in the world and if I keep doing the same things, expecting different results, I am lying to myself and practicing insanity. I believe life is a journey filled with experiences that have learning curves to them. I need to be willing to learn from the experiences in order to grow spiritually, so that I can have a positive impact those God brings across my path. This too is a process. Thanks for sharing your thoughts above.

    Have a pleasant weekend.

  6. Thanks “Galvanized” — It’s so nice to know that people are understanding and appreciating my posts….sometimes when I am writing them….I’m just not sure. So thanks….it gives me the confidence that I need as a writer, and makes me feel good that possibly something I write will touch someone.

To recognize the value found in impermanence is one of the apparent spiritual goals of human existence. Many people tend to fret about uncertainty, to fret about what they’re not doing and why. Yet, it seems easy for them to forget that change is the only predictable aspect of life.

here’s the correct quote. all others [eg yours] i found on the web seem to have been tampered with and usually appropriated without any attribution. quite shocking as it appears to come from a very authoritative source which should be respected and revered. how stupid do you think people are? is the rest of your stuff similarly acquired?

Change is so hard, and your right when things are going great… we fly on a high , like the world is in our hands… and then when they take a turn for the worst we forget all about the good times… As for me? I’m going to take your advise… I want to keep my focus on both the good and the bad and remember everything changes… for me? What a hard concept. Thank you

  10. My reply is a few years late…but i do agree (Si reply) had catherine written by Buddha instead of by Catherine Morgan her writing would of showed her integrity. However she may not of been aware at the time and sinse then has given thought to her interpretations (which is really good !) of another’s quotes.
She did interpret Buddah’s quote to a simple understanding.
