Did You See Mama Mia The Movie? It’s the best ‘feel-good’ movie I have ever seen.

Posted by Catherine Morgan on October 27, 2008

Can a good movie reduce stress? I’ve always believed that smiling and laughing is healing in some way. And, there is a lot of evidence that supports that theory. I also know that for me, music can deeply affect my mood. Some songs are sad reminders of the past, and others are happy reminders of experiences I never want to forget. Seeing the movie Mamma Mia with my daughter, and listening to all the music, is definitely going to be a lasting and happy memory for me.

This is what happened. My daughter has been wanting to see the movie Journey To The Center Of The Earth in 3-D, and we’ve also both wanted to see Mamma Mia. So, on Thursday, we decided to see Journey To The Center Of The Earth. But, when we got to the theater we found out it was only in 3-D at “selected” theaters, and we weren’t at one of those. Mamma Mia was showing in the same theater about 15 minutes later, so we decided to see that instead.

To tell you the truth, I really didn’t think that either one of the movies was going to have much of an impact on me. I was feeling quite depressed, and was only taking my daughter to the movies because I thought that was what a good mother would do.

So, since I was feeling like a failure as a mother when it came to my son, I thought I shouldn’t let my anxiety affect my daughter. However, I didn’t think anything, much less a movie, would be able to take my mind off of my troubles.

Thankfully, I was pleasantly surprised.

Abusive Relationships: Are you or someone you know in one? How can you tell? What can you do? — by Catherine Morgan (cross-posted at BlogHer)

How do you know if you are in an abusive relationship? Do you know someone who is? What warning signs can you look for?

Since nearly one third of American women have been in some sort of abusive relationship, chances are that one of these women may be you or someone you know. So, what do you do? How do you help? I think having as much information as possible is a good place to start.

From the Family Violence Project

Abuse is a pattern of coercive behavior (physical, sexual, verbal, emotional, financial, and spiritual) used by one person to control another’s actions and feelings. One way to think of these behaviors is as tactics, actions which are chosen and planned. An abuser is not “out of control” — the abuser is trying to control the victim.

World Reiki Day – Do you know what Reiki is? (with youtube videos)

World Reiki Day – Do you know what Reiki is? – by Catherine Morgan (cross-posted at BlogHer.org)

Apparently Wednesday was “World Reiki Day“, I guess I “sort-of” missed it. But, since Reiki really does deserve to have a whole week of awareness…I’ll officially declare this “World Reiki Week”. Can I do that??? Hope so. Okay, now that that is settled, let’s talk about Reiki.

Reiki means “universal” and ki or chi in Chinese means “ life force energy”, and it is said that “life force energy” is the foundation of all life. Reiki is much more than “hands on” healing, when a person discovers Reiki, they often also discover a deeper awareness of their own spirituality or potential for personal growth. And, Reiki can fit into any lifestyle (materially, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually) – making Reiki “inclusive” and available to anyone.

There are five principles of Reiki:

1. Don’t get angry today.

2. Don’t worry today.

3. Be grateful today.

4. Work hard today.

5. Be kind to others today.

It seems to me these are principles we could all stand to live by.

New Study: Diet Soda May Increase Risk of Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease, and Metabolic Syndrome — by Catherine Morgan and cross-posted at BlogHer.org

A new study, says that drinking more than one soda a day (even if it is a diet or sugar free soda), can be associated with an increased incidence of metabolic syndrome, a cluster of risk factors linked to the development of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Low-Carb Diets to combat metabolic syndrome

Eating a low-carb diet improves the hormonal signaling involved in obesity and improves the sense of fullness, allowing weight loss, according to study leader Matthew R. Hayes, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pennsylvania.

If You Want To Attract Love, Be A Loving Person — by Catherine Morgan

Did you ever notice that angry people tend to attract other angry people? That greedy people, enjoy the company of other greedy people? Just like we choose to associate with people in our lives that have similar interests as we do, we are also unconsciously choosing people that are putting out that same emotional “frequency” as we do.

So, who cares? Well, you should. That is; if you are interested in “attracting” people into your life that are kind, caring, and loving, and not angry, bitter, and hateful.

How You Can Find Peace and Happiness in Moments of Silence (with YouTube videos)

FINDING PEACE AND HAPPINESS IN MOMENTS OF SILENCE — by Catherine Morgan

Where did the saying “I just want a little peace and quiet” come from? Obviously, from someone who understood that peace can only exist in silence. The noise of life is like a barrier that stands between you and peace. But, quieting the noise with silence can break down this barrier, and open the door to the peace that is within you.

Autism: The Disease, The Debate, and The Devastated Families – by Catherine Morgan

This week in a New York Times article, the debate continued over the cause and treatment of Autism. A family once united is now divided.

A year after their grandson Christian received a diagnosis of autism in 2004, Bob Wright, then chairman of NBC/Universal, and his wife, Suzanne, founded Autism Speaks, a mega-charity dedicated to curing the dreaded neurological disorder that affects one of every 150 children in America today.

The Wrights’ venture was also an effort to end the internecine warfare in the world of autism — where some are convinced that the disorder is genetic and best treated with intensive therapy, and others blame preservatives in vaccinations and swear by supplements and diet to cleanse the body of heavy metals. — read full article,

But for those of us who don’t know too much about autism…What is autism? What are the sypmptoms of autism?

How To Leave Anger and Loneliness Behind — Choose To Be Happy

Choosing Happiness — by Catherine Morgan

“Be the change you want to see in the world” Mahatma Gandhi

Are you making significant life decisions from a place of fear or anger? Most of us do. When we make choices and respond to people and situations in our life in reaction to fearful and angry emotions, we are choosing unhappiness. From the little responses and decisions in our life, right up to the big ones. So, who cares? Why does this even matter? I genuinely believe we all want peace in our lives. Peace on earth would be great too. The saying; “Be the change you want to see in the world”, suggests that by making positive changes in our own lives, we contribute to a wave that can flow from us, to our family, to our communities, and to the world. It is such a sweet thought. Even if you don’t believe that minor changes you make in your own life can make a difference in the world, there is no doubt that the way we feel emotionally greatly affects our overall personal happiness. How are you feeling about; love, life, family, your job?

First Do No Harm — My Statement To The Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Advisory Committee in Washington, D.C.

Posted by Catherine Morgan on May 17, 2007

I will not be invisible anymore. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome has taken a lot from me, but I still have my voice, and I will be heard. With my voice I hope to help bring awareness and visibility to a disease that has been misunderstood and ignored for too long.

Conversation Piece

On May 16th and 17th the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Advisory Committee will meet in Washington, D.C. where a dedicated group of top CFS experts and advocates – will report on the latest research findings and patient needs, and submit budget allocation recommendations to the Secretary of HHS.

I was hoping to attend this meeting and give a five minute statement to the committee, as both a patient and an advocate of this disease. Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons I will be unable to attend. However, the committee has agreed to enter my statement into the record, and for this I am very grateful.

The following is my statement…

Beautiful and Inspirational Quotes of Mother Teresa

Posted by Catherine Morgan on April 15, 2007

mother teresa

I know God will not give me anything I can’t handle. I just wish that He didn’t trust me so much.

Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless.

Be faithful in small things because it is in them that your strength lies.

Do not wait for leaders; do it alone, person to person.

Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing.

I do not pray for success, I ask for faithfulness.

I want you to be concerned about your next door neighbor. Do you know your next door neighbor?

Oprah On Happiness, Laugh Yoga, With Some YouTube Videos. Generally, A Lot Of Funny Stuff.

Posted by Catherine Morgan on April 13, 2007

Oprah On Happiness, Laugh Yoga, With Some YouTube Videos. Generally, A Lot Of Funny Stuff. — by Catherine Morgan

I happened to catch the Oprah show a few days ago, I thought the topic was very interesting. I was “How Happy Are You?” There was even a quick little test you could take. The truth is, I almost turned off the show at this point (and it was the beginning). The test was 5 questions, it seemed to me to focus quite a bit on the “material” aspect of a persons life, and it is my belief that this has very little to do with true happiness. The funny thing is; I’m actually working on a post I intend to call “Happiness is in your Soul, not your Circumstance”, I guess that is why this show had appealed to me in the first place.

Anyway, I stuck it out, and I’m glad I did. There was one part of the show where an employee of Oprah’s talked about how he went to a “Laugh Yoga” class. This is what really caught my eye, and this is what I will be posting on today.

I have included three YouTube videos on the subject of Laugh Yoga. It seems really strange at first…..but it really makes a lot of sense. There is actually quite a bit of medical evidence proving the benefits of laughter. The laugh yoga might be for you, or it might not be….But, I also included a handful of funny videos, for the people who just want to have a little private laugh.

I hope you enjoy, and have a happy day! 🙂

UPDATED: Finding Out The Truth Of The Universe By Recreating The Big Bang

Finding Out The Truth Of The Universe By Recreating The Big Bang — Bringing Creation and Evolution Together – by Catherine Morgan.

I have always been interested in science, particularly in Quantum Physics. So, this story is extremely exciting to me. In just a few months, we may soon understand exactly how the universe began. I have put together several articles and videos that I think you will find very interesting, and I will continue to update this post as new information becomes available. This is the largest and most expensive experiment ever to be done, and the information here does not require you to be a scientist to understand. I hope you find it as interesting and exciting as I do.

HEALTHY DIETING –(CLICK HERE TO SEE FULL ARTICLE)

Five a day keeps the pounds away.
veggiesTrash the junk food and buy lots of fruits and vegetables! Five or more servings of fruits and veggies aren’t just a good idea to help you lose weight – they’ll help keep your heart and the rest of your body healthy. Other suggestions for eating well: exchange white bread for whole-wheat; drink lots of water and make sure you eat a healthy breakfast. Don’t skip breakfast. (Having low fat cereal and milk and a piece of fruit is a much better idea than inhaling a donut as you run to the bus stop or eating no breakfast at all!) A registered dietitian can give you lots of other snack and menu ideas.

Can The Problem Of Homelessness Ever Be Solved? I Found Someone Who Thinks It Can Be — What Do You Think?

Posted by Catherine Morgan on April 2, 2007

I posted this on my political blog, but thought it was also relevant for this site.

picture from www.beyondchron.org/

—————————————————————————————–
This is from a post at My Errant Mind titled No More Homeless In America: It Can Be Done, Here Is How.

Recognizing Homelessness Is Not A Simple Issue

The way you eliminate homelessness as a social condition is multi-faceted. It is not merely a matter of shelter. That is the first thing that must be understood.

It is not a matter of mental health issues and addictions alone, nor of finances or any other condition alone. Homelessness is a condition brought about by a variety of factors, and every individual situation is not the same. The end state, however, is.

There is a way to end this. The solution is right in front of us and ready-made, if we as a society have the desire and fortitude to pursue it. It is society itself—as a concept.
